Jean Rousset is the pseudonym of the French novelist and historian Jean-Marie Gustave Jules Rousset (1830–1906). He was born in Paris into an old family of financiers and diplomats, and he studied law at the University of Grenoble. He worked for many years in Paris as a journalist and novelist, but most of his novels were not very successful. However, he is best known for "The Crime of Sylvestre Bonnard", a historical novel published in 1874
The novel was translated into English by Gertrude Atherton in 1905 under the pseudonym "Jean Rousset". The book was re-translated into English by L.P. Hartley in 1951 under the title "The Careless Years".
